Arsenal’s on-loan midfielder Charlie Patino has been praised by Blackpool manager Michael Appleton for his ‘outstanding’ performances this season.

Patino was handed his senior Arsenal debut by Mikel Arteta almost a year ago but was allowed to leave the Gunners in the summer to gain more playing time.

The 18-year-old, who has represented England at Under-20 level, is regarded as one of Arsenal’s brightest academy prospects.

And after his display in Blackpool’s goalless draw away to Sunderland on Tuesday night, Appleton claims Patino is one of the best on-the-ball midfielders he has ever seen.

“At 18 years old he’s still, he can handle the ball in any area of the pitch, go past people on the left side, the right side,” Appleton said.

‘I said when he came to the club he’s as good as anything I’ve seen handling the ball and with good movement of the ball as you’ve seen tonight he can play as a six, can play as ten, can play as an eight. He has a really, really good future ahead of him.

– It is important that we have some players in the team who can do that and handle the ball.

‘Charlie has already been mentioned but I thought he was excellent tonight, especially in the second half.

‘He controlled the game, it was his game, he played at his pace, when he wanted to speed it up, he speeded it up, when he wanted to slow it down, when he wanted to change the game he did it.

‘It was a very mature performance from a very young boy.’
