Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at seeing Rob Holding come on the goal list as Arsenal’s unlikely hero in their win over West Ham.

Arsenal achieved a 2-1 win away to the Hammers, with defenders Holding and Gabriel both scoring from set pieces to keep their top-four hopes alive.

After 81 Premier League matches, this was Holding’s first goal, and although Arteta was not happy with the way his team played, he was very happy for the 26-year-old.

‘We did not play very well. If I had to use a word, it would be today we won ugly. Big teams need to find a way to win ugly when they are not playing well, he said.

– We found a way through set pieces and defended strongly. Winning here at West Ham is an honor for boys and shows the spirit we have.

‘We were not floating, we gave so many balls away. Rob Holding was amazing. He was the man of the battle.

‘He scored a goal and his contribution in general, whether he plays or not. He is a pleasure to have.

‘You have to find a way to win and today we won ugly. We must admit that was the way we did it.

‘We showed an incredible spirit because when we could play the way we wanted to play, we had to find a way to play that they prefer. We adapted.

‘You always have to find a way to win to win – to force mistakes, to be ingenious, to dig in, to clean up.

– I’m really happy, especially for Rob Holding, as he has not played the number of minutes he deserves. He was the man of the match today. He is always there when we need him. ‘

Arsenal sit in fourth place, two points ahead of rivals in fifth place Tottenham, where the two are due to meet on Thursday 12 May.
