Years before the pandemic encouraged legions of people to question their relationship to work, Tricia Hersey preached the gospel of rest.

Hersey, a multidisciplinary artist, author, and community organizer, began to think about the importance of rest as a theology student at Emory University in 2013. She had recently endured some personal trauma and grief, along with her difficult after-school research dealing with cultural trauma of slavery. . A few states away in Ferguson, Mo., won the Black Lives Matter movement in response to a series of police killings of black people – many of whom were caught on video and shared ubiquitously on social media.
