Yesterday, a mysterious armed faction calling itself the “Companions of the Cave” claimed the killing of an American citizen in central Baghdad yesterday.

However, an Iraqi security committee has not yet released the results of its investigations into the incident, nor has it determined whether the incident was criminal for material purposes or terrorist, carried out by an armed group behind a political party.
Sources said that if the incident turns out to be a terrorist attack; That would signal the beginning of a tussle with Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, especially after Washington has showered full blessing on his government since its formation last month.
Gunmen had shot the American citizen while he was driving in the Karrada neighborhood of Baghdad, and he was then taken to Zayed Hospital, where he died. Reuters also quoted a police source as saying, “According to our initial investigations and eyewitnesses; Gunmen tried to kidnap the American citizen” before shooting him, adding that “the victim was carrying an identity card showing that he works as an English teacher ,” while sources said he worked at an aid agency.
Yesterday, the US State Department confirmed the death of the American citizen in Baghdad, saying: “We are closely monitoring the local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death.”
