Sniper Elite 4 was a major reinvention of the stealth series that took it into a more open space. It was the first entrance after Metal Gear Solid Vwhich redefined the genre, and the influences of Hideo Kojima’s last Metal gear the game showed. Sniper Elite 4 was not near as polished or deep, but it was an acceptable alternative. Sniper Elite 5 is placed as a more refined installment, and even though in some cases it is, it still seems like the goal is a bit off.
However, the basics are still relatively in place. Aiming is smooth as Karl Fairburne is able to aim and snipe a little more efficiently than in previous games. In addition to being able to empty his lungs for a more stable shot, it is now possible to quickly snap into a first-person perspective with firearms other than a sniper rifle, making the entire arsenal a little more accurate and in line with Sniper Elitewhole schtick. This is useful as the crosshairs for these weapons are too large to get a reliable gem.
Fairburne is still able to crawl, crawl and climb around as he finds a vantage point in one of the game’s hills or perches. Rebellion Developments said it was looking at adding even more of these options so players could better engage with its insidious elements. The French castle in one of the levels shows this quite well, as the vertical character of the building has all kinds of vines and rises strewn around it. While it would take hours to tinker around every corner of the level in search of these more hidden paths, there seemed to be enough of them to elevate it beyond a straightforward shooting game. As it is in Hitman game, a race is not enough to assess its depth correctly and it seems to be on the right track.

Rebellion claimed that this approach was deliberate and that exploration may even offer detailed players additional tales or artifacts, though the former may not be worth the extra time to steal given the series’ storytelling. But some of these conversations will also reveal more about the mission, meaning that these out-of-the-way discussions can have useful gameplay benefits to reward those who sneak around. Players can miss these completely, but according to Rebellion, it’s all part of the benefits of making such a sandbox.
“It’s about offering players opportunities so they can approach every facet of the mission in a way that best suits their style of play. After watching a series of recent game sessions, no two people are approaching the game. in the same way, and the sandbox character of the gameplay makes it possible.While some players want to be careful and plan everything carefully before they are executed, there are others that are far more ‘run and gun’. . ”
These options are extended to the settings. Sniper Elite 5 has an astonishing amount of individual buttons to adjust, from the enemy’s resilience to throwing out a partially blank clip so snipers can make the game as simple or as hardcore as they want. Sniper Elite 4 was also quite customizable, so these features are not entirely new, but it’s great for a game like this that leans into its hardcore roots, while also having the potential to appeal to those outside the niche .
One of these options is in its new Invasion mode, which e.g. Dark souls or Deathloop, randomly encounters a human opponent who can pursue the host. Although not available in the demo, this has the potential to add pressure that AI simply cannot match, which fits nicely with the excitement associated with being a sniper. Rebellion said it had been playing with the idea for a while and liked the stories it was able to tell. For example, during the test, an attacker mimicked the AI by walking stiffly along a path, which fooled the other player and described the death of the host.
“When you get the message that you’ve been invaded, the tension rises immediately. You begin to question every single move you make and everything you can see. It can completely change your approach to the mission and your style of play. ”
Whether it’s a sniper after an attacker or an enemy soldier, long-range shooting is still a big part of the game, despite how the series has branched out over the years. Putting up a shot over a long distance is still hugely rewarding, mostly because of the franchise’s iconic slow-motion kill camera that zooms into the action and lets players get an intimate look at stomachs jumping and testicles exploding. Although this system has been around since the first entry in one form or another, it still hasn’t gotten old and serves as a big, crisp reward for reaching a goal. Rebellion extrapolated on how it has promoted this ingenious system (which they compared to scoring a goal in FIFA) in small but effective ways.
“To Sniper Elite 5 we have increased the realism and spookiness as bullets can now deflect the bones and cause even more damage as you also see more details on the skeleton. For the first time, you also get a kill cam for particularly amazing SMG and gun kills, which is easily one of the most in-demand features from our community. During the test, their inclusion felt like a natural development and gives great satisfaction when you hit a shot. “
While it is infinitely gratifying to see Nazi bodies being purified in slow motion, Sniper Elite 5 also lets players go the opposite way as it has non-lethal takedowns and ammunition types. The stealth genre thrives on more choices, but these benefits are perhaps more theoretical here, given the lack of a narrative rationale for sparing a faction as evil as the Nazis. Stealth games like The disgrace or Hitman make the choice between killing and not killing a more difficult dilemma. But Nazis are not complicated, and that is one of the reasons why World War II is a frequently used framework for the medium; the conflict has a clear and easy villain to slaughter, which the game does not have to spend much time explaining.
It’s jarring, and there did not seem to be many noticeable gameplay-oriented reasons to pacify them either, but they do have the potential to unfold over time as its sandbox and arsenal opens up. It seems to be solely there as an optional challenge that players can put on themselves if they choose. That’s basically what Rebellion said when asked about it, and although the team did not speak to the interruption associated with it, it stated that it found out during the test that not everyone wants to take on a mass murder train. Replaceability and freedom were the primary driving forces.
“The main reason for the non-lethal possibilities is to give the player a choice about the way they play the game. Sniper Elite 5 is a sandbox full of ‘toys’, but we’ll leave it up to the player how they approach each mission and scenario. We also want to encourage players to revisit missions and play them again with a different approach and style of play, so that non-lethal possibilities add even more to this replayability. “
The sandbox itself still needs to be fully dissected, but there were some oddities that held it back. Enemy AI ranges from pretty smart to painfully stupid or cheap. For example, throwing a corpse in an empty basement caused a cavalcade of guards to storm in from the upper floors, which is as frustrating as it is unrealistic. Some parts of the tracks have a lot of open space that is unengaging to crawl through and an easy way to be discovered by its hyper-conscious enemies. Strange hit detection, inappropriate automatic storage in the middle of firefights, picky button prompts and more quirks all contribute to a non-quantifiable but always present layer of somersaults that is hard to shake.
Rebellion’s games are often so flimsy that it’s not surprising to watch Sniper Elite 5 suffers from similar problems even though it seems like one of the studio’s better games. Its attempts to sneak Snake out of the throne in the open-world stealth genre are hard to ignore, as it apparently borrows from the last Metal Gear Solid. But there are worse games to subtract from and Sniper Elite 5 seems to have some of its own flair, though it is sometimes obscured by a mist of shit. It just remains to be seen if that fog is thick enough to throw off the shot of this long-running sniper series.
