Adding to global uncertainty around an imminent trade war and its potential impact on the world economy, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday that he had a hike in American tariffs on steel and aluminium imports by Canada, a major US trade partner. The announcement meant doubling of existing tariffs on the two categories of Canadian imports to 50 per cent from the existing 25 per cent. Trump’s decision followed a 25 per cent duty on electricity exports to the US.
The 47th President of the United States also reiterated his view that Canada should become the 51st American state, proposing to do away with the 5,525-mile border that separates the two countries.
