49ers are willing to listen to Deebo Samuel’s swapping offers, but it certainly takes a lot to get him

49ers GM John Lynch had many things to say on Monday about the Deebo Samuel situation. Although Lynch consistently declined to discuss how the relationship had developed to the point where Deebo made a trade request, Lynch said enough to allow a conclusion that if the 49ers get an offer they can not refuse, they will not.

Here is the main line from the transcript provided by the team: “We have been consistent since we have been here and we listen to almost everyone. It is something we will always do.”

In other words, Deebo is not immovable. Still, it becomes difficult to touch him. Twice Lynch said he could never imagine moving on from Deebo. That means it will take the kind of offer Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan cannot imagine, to trigger a barter.

“He’s just too good of a player,” Lynch said. “You’re thinking of 2019, the 36th choice, to come up with someone like Deebo, who for me has just been a player changing the game in our franchise. I’ve told Deebo this, I think he’s the perfect illustration. Herm Edwards used to talk about when will meets skill, you have the opportunity to be special. And I think Deebo probably embodies that just as much as anyone else, he has a huge will, he is a very talented I think, by the way he plays, it’s inspiring, and it involves leadership for me. Do you make people around you better? He checks that box. He’s a great teammate. And I think about things like before matches, I get out there and he always throws the ball with the fans.I think he has been a great member of our community so we have nothing but love for him and nothing but appreciation for what he has bought , but you just do not let such guys go.I can not imagine a scenario, hv or we would. ”

But Lynch would certainly have said three months ago that he can not imagine a scenario where Samuel would no longer be part of the team, no longer be a member of the community. Although it is still unknown how it happened, the reality is that the 49ers somehow failed to ensure that they have the right relationship with Samuel. If they had not, he would not go out.

Lynch said the 49ers have spoken to Samuel. It is possible that the 49ers at this point are hoping to get through the draft and hope Deebo will realize he has no real options if he wants to play football in 2022.

Still, it is hard to have much faith in the team’s handling of Samuel in the future, as their previous efforts have resulted in Samuel no longer wanting to be part of the team.
