2022 NFL Draft Result: Detroit Lions pick Kayvon Thibodeaux No. 2 overall pick

Aidan Hutchinson resides in the state of Michigan.

With the overall number two in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have selected Hutchinson.

The Michigan winger exploded on stage after an impressive 2021 season at Ann Arbor. After scoring just 4.5 sacks in his previous 16 starts, Hutchinson was asked to be in more of a stand-up pass rusher role last season, and he absolutely thrived. His 16.5 sacks broke a Michigan football record, and his 93.3 PFF amount was the best of all power-five-edge defenders. He is the No. 1 prospect in this draft according to PFF and Athletics Dane Brugler.

He’s also a much-needed upgrade to the Lions ’lackluster pass-rush. Detroit ranked 30th in sacks last season and 29th in press percentage. He will challenge for a starting job alongside the likes of Charles Harris and Romeo Okwara, the latter of whom are still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon in Week 4.

Hutchinson wins with an incredibly motoric and relentless attitude. He is also an above average running back. All of these qualities must have made him happy with Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

If there’s a weakness in Hutchinson’s play, it’s his short arm length that could get him in trouble if offensive tackles get their fingers in him. But his tenacious playing style sometimes gets him out of a jam.

Here’s what our own Erik Schlitt had to say about Hutchinson in his plea to the Lions to draft him:

Although Hutchinson has not taken the elite bend of edge rushers on top of previous drafts, he is a technician and his hands are married to the feet and move in unison. He attacks the edge with violence and prefers to initiate contact first, allowing him to control the interaction. His engine never stops, and he constantly struggles with his hands, moving his feet and working at his angles as he fights offensive linemen. When he is at his game, he can overwhelm even the best offensive tackles.

Welcome to Detroit, Aidan!
